Description
This course is the third part of the lecture series of Strength of Materials course. It takes you through various topics like Thin Cylinders, Spherical Shells and Columns and Struts. Various numerical are solved to explain the concepts and their applications. Basic Mathematics and Solid Mechanics are the requirement for understanding of this subject. We start with introduction to Thin Cylinders and then solve numericals based on them. Concepts like Hoop Stress(circumferential stress) and Longitudinal stress are explained here. Then derivation on calculation of Hoop stress, longitudinal stress, shear stress and change in dimensions have been explained.Further, we move to the concept of Spherical Shells and then solve numericals based on them. Concept of Hoop Stress(circumferential stress) is explained here. There is no longitudinal stress for spherical shells as sphere doesn’t have length. Then derivation on calculation of Hoop stress, shear stress and change in dimensions have been explained.Third section deals with Columns and Struts wherein Euler’s theory and its assumptions for long column is explained. Numericals are solved for the same. Limitation of Euler’s theory is also added for understanding the shift to use of Rakhine-Gordan Formula. Further, Rakhine-Gordan Formula is explained and numericals are solved on it. Lastly additional lecture has been provided to give extra information of the other available courses for better and in-depth understanding of the course.Test is given at the end of course for practice so that expertise can be gained in dealing with day-to-day problems.
