In this class you will learn how to transfer reference photos for sketching and painting. I will show you how I transfer photos to a sketchbook, watercolor paper and a canvas.
The four methods shared in this class are –
Breaking the photo down into simple shapes – This is useful with simpler pictures which can be broken down into simpler shapes like circle, square or rectangle.
Grid method – We will create a grid on the reference photo and then draw the grid on the sketchbook. Next, draw in each square of the grid as it is in the reference. This method is very useful when you want to scale your drawings.
Tracing – Put the tracing paper on top of your reference , and then draw the photo. These days, some artists use a light box, but you can use your laptop screen, tablet/iPad or even a glass window for this method.
Tracing and transferring – It is a 2 step process, first tracing the reference on a tracing paper and then transferring it onto any surface using a graphite paper.
Materials Required –
Ruler
A screen with high brightness (laptop, tablet, mobile phone) or a lightbox
Tracing paper
Graphite Paper (A DIY way of making a graphite paper is to scribble all over the paper on one side, which could then be used as a graphite paper.)
