Description
Animosity remains between Greeks and Turks 200 years after the Ottoman Turks left Greece. Today the Greek and Turkish people know little about what the animosity is based on, and particularly the events of 1919-23.
This course covers who was responsible for the Greek Army landing in Turkey in 1919 and why the Greek Army went to Turkey. Very important, the course covers the reaction of the Greek people, and the role of religious leaders. There was a Great Greek Hero who the Greek people today do not know. The history of the Greek people explains why wars occur, including wars fought by the US.
The course covers, without prejudice, the horrible conduct of Greeks, Turks and Armenians. Violence was replaced with peace by an American minister working for the YMCA. He had to blackmail the Greek Government to get the first 26 ships to remove the Greeks and Armenians from Turkey. The fleet was expanded allowing this hunchback American to remove, according to the Ecumenical Patriarch, 1,250,000 people to safety.
Today world leaders say wars and disputes should be settled by discourse. History shows more than discourse is required. The Greek story is an example. Amazingly, this American was respected by both the Greek and Turkish leaders. The role of that respect is part of the story.
People watching these videos have grown up with so much propaganda that they will be inclined not to believe what they are being told. So original records are shown throughout the course. What you will be learning is factual and not propaganda. Of particular importance is the person known as Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He was unlike all other Turks. This is covered using unpublished records of the Jennings family based on years of face to face contact with the man known as the Gazi.
On September 20, 1922, the American, Rev. Asa K. Jennings, met with the Gazi. That meeting changed the future of the Greeks, Armenians, and most of all, the Turks. The Gazi adopted the principle "peace at home, peace In the world." Turkey continues to follow that principle today. The world can learn so much by the examples set by the Gazi.
You will learn, for example, how the work of Jennings led to changes in Turkey. Women went from seclusion in the home to being equal partners in the Turkish economy and society. Today Turkish women have the same legal rights as men. That is not true in any other country of the Middle East. Such actions benefited people more than the discourse called for by world leaders. World leaders need to learn how to create peace and prosperity.
Greeks and Turks deserve to know their history. "The truth shall set you free." All people around the world can learn so much by studying the Greek-Turkish example.
