MagiCAD Group has released MagiCAD 2022 for Revit and AutoCAD. The new version presents advanced tools and features for a new level of accuracy and intelligence in MEP design. MagiCAD 2022 supports the latest Autodesk platforms Revit 2022 and AutoCAD 2022.

MagiCAD 2022 brings extensive new functionality for MEP design in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD environments enabling MEP designers to produce work that is highly accurate and easily adaptable for further uses.

MagiCAD 2022 for Revithelps improve design accuracy and quality with multiple new additions. A new Segment Adjustment tool provides exceptional control with precise definitions of distances and offsets when moving multiple segments. Design accuracy is also improved with the introduction of new gender types for duct fittings and generic distribution boxes for ventilation systems, while simultaneously enabling more realistic designs for installation purposes.

The new version also impacts the daily design workflows of MEP designers. Users can combine drainage products and install them as a combination, download pre-configured pipe and drainage series from the MagiCAD Cloud online service, and customise the running index logic in a model according to index area rows. MagiCAD 2022 also provides numerous enhancements to popular tools, including clash checking, provisions for builderswork openings, and connection nodes, as well as functionalities to set up and use national classification systems in projects.

1. Change pipe series for existing networks

Piping

Sometimes changes to piping criteria (material, cost etc.) require designers to change the entire pipe series mid-project when many pipe networks have already been modelled. Implementing these changes to completed pipe networks is a very time-consuming operation that risks issues with network connectivity or lost information.

The Change Property function now makes it easy to change the pipe series for an existing network without losing any critical parameter information. A mapping function allows you to link size options between the source and target series, ensuring a correct replacement for each item in the series.

2. Generic air handling units

Ventilation

The new Generic AHU feature allows you to create generic air handling units (AHU) to help with early design phases where detailed system design is not needed. The generic air handling units can be used as placeholders to ensure sufficient space for the equipment in technical rooms and enable effective early planning of ventilation systems. Simply type in the air handling unit size and select connection placements and sizes. If needed, you can also add equipment, pressure drop, and flow information to the unit. The created units can be later edited as the system is developed further.

You can also create an Excel export of all the technical information of the created air handling units in order to communicate equipment needs to manufacturers for pricing or production time estimates.

3. Adjust sprinkler pipe sizes directly in calculation report

Sprinkler

You can now change sprinkler pipe sizes directly in the sprinkler network calculation report and then recalculate with the new pipe sizes. Simply right-click the appropriate line in the System results window and select a new pipe size in the dialog that opens. The new pipe size applies to all pipes and fittings between the sprinkler system nodes of the selected section (nodes 28 to 29 in the pictures).

4. Modify and lock automatically created provisions and other enhancements to the Builderswork openings tool

Common

Sometimes designers need to manually modify the dimensions of an automatically calculated and created provision in order to accommodate design changes. However, if they were to then run the automatic provision tool again, the modified provision would revert back to its original dimensions. In order to enable easier customization of automatically created provisions users can now lock and unlock provision sizes after editing with a new selection in the Provision for builderswork openings tool.

In addition, shared parameters for size, system type of the penetrating objects, and gross and net volume of the provision have been added to provision object. Previously, only the provision type, host and fire rating parameters were included. The new parameters make it easier to consider various additional requirements for the provisions, such as fire protection.

5. Extended national classification code support and possibility to edit RFA name and material code for fittings

All

MagiCAD 2022 enabled the creation and management of national classification code systems. The new version adds national classification code support in the dataset for fittings and insulation to provide users with a more comprehensive classification functionality.

In addition, users can now change the Revit family (RFA) name and material codes for fittings. This is useful when, for example, a generic family is used in two different segment series and a different material code is needed in each one. In this case, you can simply rename the family and add a unique material code to avoid conflicting material codes within the same family.

6. System Type Manager for ventilation and piping
Ventilation, Piping

The new System Type Manager tool allows you to view and edit all the ventilation and piping systems of a project in a single window. This makes managing ventilation and piping systems considerably easier and more effective. System Type Manager allows you to create new systems, modify the properties of existing ones and to remove systems. There is no more need to jump from one system to another in order to edit them or to access system information.

7. Select product array orientation during product installation

All

When installing products by array, the same orientation is rarely suitable for all room shapes in a building. You can now manually select the orientation for a product array during product installation, making it easier to find the optimal solution for each space. To select the orientation, simply click two points in the model and the product array is oriented accordingly. You can also set the same orientation for multiple spaces simultaneously to save time.

8. Add pressure measuring units to ventilation systems

Ventilation

Constant pressure dampers use a sensor placed downstream in the network in order to maintain a pre-set static or total pressure in the network. You can now install any device from the Other duct component class to a ventilation system, set it as a pressure measurer, and define the desired pressure level at the measuring unit. This complements constant pressure dampers and enables them to be included in ventilation calculations.

9. Wire types for extra-low voltage (ELV) circuits

Electrical

A new MC ELV Wire Type parameter in extra-low voltage (ELV) systems allows you to add wire types for ELV circuits. You can easily set any wire type found in the Revit project as the ELV circuit wire type with MagiCAD functions. This allows ELV circuit wire types to be included in many different electrical tasks, such as cable packet functionalities, filling calculations, different types of schematics and when updating wire types from circuits to wire instances.

10. Cable classification and other new selections in Wire Type Management

Electrical

A Cable classification selection has been added to the Wire Type Management tool. The selection can be used for marking CPR (Construction Products Regulation) classification, which assigns a fire protection category to cables based on their flame spread and heat release properties. Definition of CPR classification has recently become mandatory for cables. The Cable classification information is automatically updated to wire type parameters where it can be tagged or added to reports.

In addition, cross-section areas of phase and earthing conductors can now be defined for each wire type. The areas are automatically updated into wire type parameters along with the phase and earthing conductor material.

11. Calculate cable lengths based on drawn routes

Electrical

You can now select to use the lengths of drawn wire routes when calculating total wire lengths in a project. Using drawn routes provides a more accurate calculated total length for wire instances, but also improves supply cable length and longest branch length calculations for circuits. The increased accuracy in estimating cable lengths results in more accurate electrical calculations overall and precise Bill of Materials listings.

12. Protective device selection for electrical calculations (Schneider Electric)

Electrical

You can now manually select a suitable protective device for each circuit in electrical calculations, instead of the calculation engine selecting protective devices automatically. The selected protective device is automatically locked so the calculation engine does not suggest changing it to another afterwards. If you select an incompatible device, this is notified with an error message during the calculations.

The available selection of protective devices depends on the used localization of the Schneider Electric calculation engine.

13. Standard Export/Import interface for electrical calculations with 3rd party software

Electrical

A new standard Export/Import interface enables communication and cooperation with 3rd party electrical calculation software. The feature allows you to export an entire electrical network into an xml file, which can be used in a calculation software or modified manually. The edited xml file can then be imported using the same function to bring the edited data into the project.

The first cooperation with the new interface has been completed with Italian developer Exel S.r.l. Their calculation software, Progetto Integra, is able to work with the Revit xml file and produce an edited xml file to be brought back into the Revit project. This means that you can model your electrical network in Revit, perform electrical calculations with Progetto Integra, and bring the calculation results back into Revit so that all the information is saved in the project.

14. Gas system calculations according to Italian UNI 7129-1:2015 standard

Calculations

MagiCAD now enables gas system calculations according to the Italian UNI 7128-1:2015 standard. The functionality includes calculation of gas flows, pressure levels, and system sizing for gas networks. Pressure losses are calculated using the Renouard equation and equivalent lengths for fittings and components are assigned according to the Prospetto A.1 table in the standard.

15. Gas buoyancy calculation

Calculations

As natural gas is lighter than air, it creates an upward force that can reduce the effect of pressure loss from pipes and fittings. MagiCAD now enable calculation of gas buoyancy in vertical pipes, resulting in more accurate gas calculations overall.

16. Connection nodes between models (Beta version of feature)

Ventilation

In large Revit projects, models are often divided into multiple smaller files to resolve performance issues. However, since MEP systems often run through all of the separate model files, this approach prevents running calculations for complete MEP systems.

Connection nodes between models allow you to link systems in separate model files for calculation purposes. There are two methods for adding the connection nodes, manual and automatic. In manual linking you can select the ducts that you want to link in each file. In automatic linking, a linked duct node is automatically imported into the same location in the corresponding model and you can continue drawing the system from it.

This feature is launched as a beta version for MagiCAD Ventilation only.
The existing functionality is tested and can already be used in MagiCAD Ventilation, but additional functions and support for Piping will be developed later on to complete the feature.
