COMSOL Software 6.2 Update 2 – Released January 24, 2024
All COMSOL software products undergo performance and stability improvements that are introduced as updates. The following list contains the most important improvements in COMSOL version 6.2 update 2 (and update 1).

COMSOL Multiphysics
– The rendering of shadows has been improved.
– Support for Apple M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max has been added.
– Changed the default BLAS library for Macs with Apple silicon to ArmPL for improved performance.
– Improved performance in some cases when running COMSOL with the -blas aocl option.
– The Boundary Layers operation has been improved, primarily with respect to performance, which means that meshes with boundary layer elements may look slightly different than in previous versions.
– Much faster processing of models that include many identical boundaries on a complex geometry and use periodic conditions, identical mesh, or boundary similarity couplings, particularly if used in combination with mesh control entities.
– When using an external SQL Server database with a Model Manager server in 6.2, the default is to make an encrypted connection using TLS. This can cause the connection to fail if the certificate of the SQL Server is not trusted by the Model Manager server runtime. It is now possible to work around this with the new settings for the SQL Server connection in the Model Manager server database configuration, which allow you to either disable the TLS encryption or opt to trust the certificate.
– Fixes a potential out-of-memory error that may occur when saving a model containing, in terms of disk space usage, large computed data to a Model Manager server database.
– For modal reduced-order models, the damping-ratio matrix is now consistently updated to reflect the chosen modal damping.
– Two new formatting modes for adding mathematical expressions to Description titles have been added: the display and inline math modes.
. To use the LaTeX display math mode, put [ ] around the LaTeX mathematical expression in the Title field. This mode uses more vertical space for the math expression.
. To use the LaTeX inline math mode, put \$ \$ around the LaTeX mathematical expression in the Title field. This mode is meant to be used inline in the text (in standard LaTeX) and has a more compact presentation.
– A bug in the visualization of work planes has been fixed.
– Improved shadows of point lights.
– Changed the default visualization material in Descriptions. This makes 3D Descriptions appear more similar to those in version 6.1.2
– The Graphics window is now updated immediately when the legend position is changed in a Description group.
– The handling of singular geometries in the array datasets has been improved.
– The directivity Description now ignores duplicate frequencies.
– The VTK export now runs faster.
– Reduced the time it takes to launch the help system.
– Fixed a bug that prevented the help system from working for IPv6.2
– Fixed an issue where copying some features between components created a model history as Java® code that did not run.
– Documentation has been added for the Random Flat Surface geometry part, and the implementation has been improved.
– Security improvements.
– Performance improvements.
– Stability improvements.
Application Builder
– Fixed a memory leak in the Test Application feature.
– The font of tab headers is now preserved when hiding and showing tabs in a form collection in apps.
– Stability improvements.
AC/DC Module
– Unit support is extended to include the kiloOersted (kOe).
– An issue affecting models created in earlier versions of COMSOL Multiphysics using the Lorentz Coupling feature, when opened in version 6.2, has been corrected.
– Stability improvements.
Acoustics Module
– For models using the Pressure Acoustics, Transient interface, the Interior Sound Hard Boundary (Wall) feature is now treated consistently inside the Perfectly Matched Layer domain.
– Handling of nonorthogonal modes by the Port condition in the Pressure Acoustics, Frequency Domain interface has been added. Nonorthogonal modes may be present if the boundaries of the studied waveguide have impedance boundary conditions.
– For poroelastic waves, although the finite element solution was correct, the poroelastic wave speed variables were evaluated incorrectly. This affected the fast or slow pressure wave as well as the porous shear wave, and the problem occurred only for the Shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio material input option. This problem has now been fixed. Note the that the corrected variable evaluation can have an influence on meshing, where the slowest wave needs to be resolved adequately.
– The poroelastic wave speeds, for the fast and slow pressure waves and the shear wave, are now defined for results analysis in the Anisotropic Poroelastic Material model.
– Stability improvements.
Battery Design Module
Stability improvements.
CAD Import Module
– Support has been added for importing ACIS® 2024 1.0 and SOLIDWORKS® 2024 files on Windows.
– Restored functionality for importing files saved with educational versions of SOLIDWORKS.
– In previous versions, edges were approximated when meshing, giving an approximation error that could not be decreased by refining the mesh. This issue was fixed for the COMSOL kernel in version 6.2. In version 6.2 update 2, it has also been fixed for the CAD kernel. This is important if high accuracy in the surface normal is required, for example, in ray optics.
– Stability improvements.
CFD Module
– Explanatory sketches have been added in the Mixing Plane feature for 3D models.
– Stability improvements.
Chemical Reaction Engineering Module
– Stabilization has been updated to account for the contribution from the Out-of-Plane Flux feature.
– The unit of molar mass constants created by a Thermodynamic System has been corrected. When using these constants directly, the numerical value previously corresponded to that of g/mol, but the unit shown was kg/mol. Note that the molar mass variables created automatically by the Reaction Engineering interface and the Chemistry interface were correct.
– Stability improvements.
Composite Materials Module
Stability improvements.
Corrosion Module
Stability improvements.
File Import for CATIA V5
Support has been added for importing CATIA V5 2024 files on Windows.
Fuel Cell And Electrolyzer Module
Stability improvements.
Heat Transfer Module
– Improved accuracy in the Moisture Transport interfaces when using convective terms under conservative form.
– The accuracy of the viscous dissipation contribution in the High viscous dissipation at wall thermal wall function has been improved.
– In the scope of porous media under the local thermal nonequilibrium assumption, the viscous dissipation contribution added by the Nonisothermal Flow multiphysics coupling and the Viscous Dissipation subfeature has been corrected.
– The total work source term has been added to the predefined Energy Balance global evaluation group, and the total accumulated heat rate term has been replaced by the total accumulated energy rate.
– When using the Discrete Ordinates Method feature for 2D models, the discrete ordinates are no longer projected on the xy-plane. When using expressions depending on the third coordinate of the discrete directions in features supporting ordinates substitution (e.g., Initial Values or Incident Intensity), the results will now be closer to the equivalent 3D model.
. This change also modifies the scattering term in 2D when the Scattering type is set to Polynomial anisotropic or Henyey-Greenstein; it will now be closer to the equivalent 3D model. This will not affect the results of models using the Isotropic or Linear Anisotropic Scattering type.
– Stability improvements.
LiveLink for Inventor

LiveLink for MATLAB
– The mphmean function now has the properties intsurface and intvolume, which can be useful for axisymmetric models.
– Stability improvements.
LiveLink for Simulink

Mixer Module
– Improved physics-controlled mesh for the Rotating Shaft feature.
– Performance improvements.
Nonlinear Structural Mechanics Module
Stability improvements.
Optimization Module
– Removed hard-coded iteration limit for the interior point optimizer (IPOPT) and sparse nonlinear optimizer (SNOPT) solvers.
– When defining least-squares objective functions via a table in the Settings window for a Least-Squares Objective feature, units added to the Unit input for the Value column are now handled correctly.
– Stability improvements.
Pipe Flow Module
Stability improvements.
Porous Media Flow Module
Stability improvements.
RF Module
Stability improvements.
Semiconductor Module
An absorption coefficient is now available for the Indirect Optical Transitions feature.
Structural Mechanics Module
– For the Plate physics interface, the following three features can now prescribe the acceleration in the z direction: Gravity, Base Excitation, and Linearly Accelerated Frame.
. For the Gravity feature, the new default value is "-gconst" in the z direction and zero in the other two directions. If you perform modeling using the Java® API and your model requires Gravity with a nonzero component in the y direction only (the default value in previous versions), you need to modify the code at the place where the feature is added. The resulting code will be similar to: model.component("comp1").physics("plate").create("gacc1", "GravityAcceleration", -1); model.component("comp1").physics("plate").feature("gacc1").set("g", new String[] {"0", "-gconst", "0"});.
– For the Test Material node in the Solid Mechanics interface, two corrections have been made in the interpretation of the Pressure function input in the force-driven user-defined isotropic test. The input is now interpreted as true pressure (force per current area), with positive values corresponding to compression.
– The mass contribution of fibers modeled with the Fiber node are now correctly included for all study types.
– Stability improvements.
Uncertainty Quantification Module
