COMSOL, the leading provider of software solutions for multiphysics modeling has released version 6.1 (282) of the COMSOL Multiphysics software. In base release introduces new functionality for detached eddy simulation, thermal analysis of satellites, winding layouts for electric motors, and robust mechanical contact.

COMSOL Software version 6.1 Update 1 – Date: December 15, 2022

COMSOL Multiphysics
– It is now possible to use the Least-Squares Fit function without any add-on products
– Improved performance for the withsol operator on domains with many mesh elements
– Improved error messages for duplicate user-defined variables
– Improved the All option for extra time steps in Particle Trajectories and Ray Trajectories Descriptions
– Fixed an issue in the linearization of nonlinear terms involving time derivatives in eigenvalue computations that previously could have influenced calculated eigenvalues
– The splash screen for the COMSOL Documentation application has been updated to display the correct version number
– Fixed a problem where the toolbars in Description windows of a COMSOL Multiphysics® server were not displaying properly
– Fixed a problem where the toolbar in the Graphics window would sometimes disappear when selecting a component node after having selected a Description group
– Dragging sliders is now possible on Ubuntu® 22.04
– Fixed an issue where COMSOL Client did not refresh the Application Library properly
– The report output for Study and Solver nodes has been modified to better match the layout of the COMSOL Desktop® Settings windows
– Corrected the warning given when a time-dependent, modal, reduced-order model is trained with a nonlinear or explicitly time-dependent output expression
– Improved performance for the discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method on clusters
– Fixed an issue where performing mesh adaptation on a subset of domains when a physics interface is defined on a different subset could lead to an error
– Memory usage has been reduced for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling on clusters when using default iterative linear solvers
– The equation display in partial different equation (PDE) interfaces now follows the equation form
– Improved the automatic selection of which geometric entities to keep and which to remove when an entity is collapsed or entities are merged in the mesh.
– Improved performance in geometry analysis for large imported meshes with many geometric entities
– Proxy-server preference settings are used when checking for and downloading product updates
– The context menu under Results to add a predefined Description directly has been removed. Instead, you can now open the Add Predefined Description window from the context menu under Results.
– Stability improvements
– Performance improvements
– Security improvements
Application Builder
– Added Method Editor code-completion support for multiphysics couplings
– Fixed a problem where sections were unexpectedly expanded or collapsed in Settings Forms
– onLoad and onClose events are now triggered for local forms in form collections
AC/DC Module
– Smoother normB fields on axes in 2D axisymmetric models
Acoustics Module
– Momentum and mass conservation contributions have been added for acoustic streaming models where thermoviscous acoustics is coupled with fluid flow for models that have an inlet, outlet, open boundary, or stress boundary
– An error in the formulation of the Komatsu option for the Delany-Bazley-Miki model in the Poroacoustics interface has been fixed
Battery Design Module
– On the Batteries node in the Battery Pack interface, the input has been changed from Battery pack capacity to Initial battery cell capacity
CAD Import Module
– The Parasolid libraries used in the CAD kernel and in the import and export of CAD files have been upgraded on Windows and Linux
– In versions 6.0 and 6.1, the STEP file import did not import layer attributes as boundary selections. This has now been fixed on Windows and Linux®
CFD Module
– Fixed a bug where all Wall features in a new interface had the same Wall condition (No slip/Slip) as the last Wall feature in the original interface
Geomechanics Module
– The plastic potential of the Hardening Soil model has been corrected for the general three-dimensional stress state
– The plastic shear-strain hardening variable has been corrected for the Hardening Soil material model
Structural Mechanics Module
– The override rules for the Spring Foundation node in the Solid Mechanics interface in 1D and 1D axisymmetry have been improved
– The boundary conditions for biaxial and shear tests in the Test Material feature have been corrected
– It is now possible to use the Lumped-Structure Connection multiphysics coupling in 1D
– Reaction moments are now dynamically recomputed when changing the reference point for moment calculation in the Parameters section of a Description node. This applies to the Beam, Pipe Mechanics, Beam Rotor, Truss, and Wire interfaces
– The definition of section forces and moments in the Pipe Mechanics interface has been improved for flexibility analyses. This improvement includes stiffness corrections using the Bend subnode.
– Load contributions from Added Mass and Point Mass in the Beam interface are now treated correctly
Subsurface Flow Module
– The Thin Barrier boundary condition and the Fracture feature with the Fracture model set to Thin conducting barrier can now be used within the same COMSOL model
Wave Optics Module
– When using structured meshes for the Electromagnetic Waves, Beam Envelopes interface, the generated mesh has been improved by the inclusion of more Distribution nodes where needed

COMSOL Multiphysicsis a general-purpose simulation software for modeling designs, devices, and processes in all fields of engineering, manufacturing, and scientific research. In addition to using multiphysics modeling for your own projects, you can also turn your models into simulation applications and digital twins for use by other design teams, manufacturing departments, test labs, customers, and more. The platform product can be used on its own or expanded with functionality from any combination of add-on modules for simulating electromagnetics, structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical engineering. The add-on modules and LiveLink products connect seamlessly for a modeling workflow that remains the same regardless of what you are modeling.
COMSOL Multiphysics version 6.1introduces new functionality for detached eddy simulation, thermal analysis of satellites, winding layouts for electric motors, and robust mechanical contact. A new interface enables the analysis of battery packs with several hundred cells. Simulation of acoustically driven flows is made possible by a new acoustic streaming interface. New mesh repair tools for the handling of misaligned models provide an alternative to traditional CAD repair and defeaturing. Direct modeling operations make it possible to perform parametric sweeps of imported CAD models and optimize them. New functionality for including direct shadows in visualizations provides enhanced depth perception.
