Metadata
Use the Metadata Editor to manage key/value and query searches for specific information. This reduces Scenegraph complexity, controlling scene configuration and variants. Transport component information throughout your process for a software-agnostic pipeline integration. Work with multiple metadata sets, including imported metadata from CATIA, DGN, Inventor, IGES, JT, NX, CREO, SolidEdge, SolidWorks, STEP, and PLMXML. Add custom sets, as well as user-specific visualization metadata, such as colored tags. Favorite sets and save them. Copy and paste sets from one node to another, as well as from one categories to another. Assign a specific data type to your metadata, such as string, boolean, date, time, or others. We also included search and filtering of metadata in other modules.
Scenegraph Decoupling
The decoupling of the Scenegraph is complete, making it possible to access all properties via the Python API. Expect to see menus, options, and UI improvements, as well as new and advanced searches.
VRED Library
Access to the VRED Web Server and port 8888 are required for downloading the VRED Library.
Advanced Search Functionality
We added advanced searches to the Scenegraph, Material Editor, Camera Editor, and new Metadata Editor, based on Python, which is more powerful than our basic search and helps you search and navigate large amounts of data and deep graphs. It provides the ability to search both scene data and metadata, together in combination or seperately.
Expansion Column
We added columns that are tucked into the Tree View of the Camera Editor, Light Editor, Scenegraph, and Sceneplate Editor for seeing which nodes contain metadata, animation, transform variants, touch sensors, and/or annotations.
Python API Improvements
You’ll find changes to existing V1 API and V2 API Python commands, along with the addition of others, specifically ones for the new decoupled Scenegraph.
General Improvements
Here are the scripting, raytracing, VRED Go, and UV Editor improvements that can be found in 2023.3.
Scripting
– Added an example for how to open the VRED terminal from the xR Home Menu. See the Menu with Show Terminal button example.
– Added examples for how to render one stillframe image per viewpoint of a camera track and how to render an image sequence for camera track animation (flying to all viewpoints). See Rendering Camera Tracks.
– Made the Script Editor dockable and it can now stay in front of the screen.
– Added a command to convert a node to a switch.
– Added support of MaterialNode to create MaterialGroup in the Scenegraph.
– Added commands for Copy Transformation and Paste Transformation.
Raytracing
– Added Denoise Alpha to Edit > Preferences > Render Settings > Antialiasing and Render Settings > Antialiasing for toggling of alpha channel denoising and filtering of sampled environment caustics. When disabled, the alpha channel is copied from the input image without applying the denoiser, which increases render performance. We also added the Python command, setDenoiseAlpha(true/false).
– Improved environment map quality on materials with low roughness in Full Global Illumination.
– Improved magnification of anisotropic filtered textures.
– Fixed incorrect IBL results when the lightsource is close to the pole.
VRED Go
– We enabled DLSS support when triggered via a script. Use setDLSSQuality().
UV Editor
– We improved the Unify Vertices behavior.
Help Changes
For the videos, we added captions with updated instructions to the Quick Start, VRED Basic File Handling, Working with VRED, Geometry Data Preparation, Scenegraph Data Preparation, User Interface, Material Editor, Material Types, Material Type Settings, Camera Settings, Animation Basics, Rendering, Raytracing, Lighting, Engineering, Scripting, Webserver, and Variants videos. Look for updated videos in the 2024 releases.
For tutorials, we added topic cards with images and a brief description of all tutorials in that section to the landing pages. This puts everything in one place, making it faster to find what you’re looking for.

Asset Manager
– Table Sorting – Fixed table sorting by column after selecting another directory.
– Locked Assets – Fixed the crash when attempting to create a group while locked assets are selected.
GPU Raytracing
– Nvidia driver 526 – Fixed the crash when building acceleration structures using Nvidia driver 526.xx versions with memory pools enabled.
– Chrome Highlights – Fixed support for mipmapping for the Sphere environment material. Now, the reflection brightness is similar for GPU and CPU rendering.
Light Editor
– Unshare – When cloned lights are unshared, the result is now multiple independent lights, one for each clone.
Raytracing
– Skylight Environments – Fixed missing reflections for Skylight environments, so now CPU and GPU raytracing results are consistent.
Scenegraph
– Touch Sensors – Touch sensors are now handled correctly when nodes are duplicated.
. UI Updates – Added missing Scenegraph user interface updates.
. Show Components – If Show Components is disabled, all currently selected components are now deselected.
. Node Selection – It is no longer possible to select nodes that are not shown in the Scenegraph.
. Select All – Using Select All in the Scenegraph no longer causes a multi-selection effect in the Transform window that remains on subsequent single selections.
. Context Menus – Torn off context menus no longer appear on top of other app windows.
. Node Tags – Unassigned node tags are no longer deleted when saving a file.
. Switches – Improved the behavior when removing the last group of a switch.
– Keyboard Shortcuts – Using keyboard shortcuts to navigate within the tree no longer switches the focus.
. Source Files – (Re)import Source loads only source files, not smarts.
. Group Icon – A group node is no longer marked as Transformable Clone Root and its icon correctly updates, after undoing cloning.
Scripting
– vrdGeometryNode.setPrimitiveType – vrdGeometryNode.setPrimitiveType now works on new geometry.
– mergeGeometry – The mergeGeometry commands now behave the same as the corresponding UI commands.
Tessellation
– Geometry Intersections – Tessellating geometry no longer causes unwanted geometry intersection.
– JT Files – Retesselation of JT files no longer leads to major artefacts in geometry.
VR and XR
– Hand Tracking – Varjo XR-3 Ultraleap hand tracking is no longer disabled if changing between display MODI.
Autodesk VRED (that’s Virtual Reality Editor)covers advanced visualisation, rendering and design review. VRED is a visualisation system, but it’s one that combines the progressive, physically based rendering available in other systems (such as KeyShot or V-Ray) with a set of tools to allow you to bake those visualisation properties (materials, textures, lightings, shadows and so on) into highly efficient datasets that support design review, collaboration, large-scale visualisation and increasingly, virtual reality.
VRED Professionalis an innovative and powerful software solutionfor 3D visualization with a superior quality. Fitted with physical camera and material and light settings, based on plastic, metal, coal or fabric physical features, VRED Professional allows users to create visual phototrrealistic fixes. The higher quality that you can achieve straight from VRED Professional, reduces significantly post-production costs.
Use theAsset Manager in VREDto manage items like scenes, environments, and materials across multiple projects. Each tab contains the assets and location of those assets for that category. Global assets stored anywhere in the network can be accessed as from a local folder. This supports standardization throughout several projects or even across multiple departments within the company.
VRED 2023 What’s New
The new 2023 version includes now a completely reworked Material Editor. It is decoupled now and all properties are accessible via the Python API, which is very helpful for automation or for using VRED Core for example.
Autodeskhelps people imagine, design and create a better world. Everyone-from design professionals, engineers and architects to digital artists, students and hobbyists-uses Autodesk software to unlock their creativity and solve important challenges.
