The great 17th century German mathematician and natural philosopher Johannes Kepler was in the truest sense a Pythagorean. He believed, as Pythagoras did many centuries before, that the world around us could be measured and understood in terms of numbers. Measurement was the key.

Kepler is mostly remembered for his work in astronomy and in particular the three laws of planetary motion. Kepler’s First and Second Laws appeared in 1609 in his book Astronomia Nova (the New Astronomy). His Third and most remarkable law was discovered in 1618 and appeared for the first time in print in 1619 book Harmonice Mundi (Harmony of the Worlds).
Included in this book is a wonderful article written by Albert Einstein in 1930 on the 300th anniversary of Kepler’s death describing how Johannes Kepler discovered the shape and size of Earth’s Orbit around the Sun.
There is also an excerpt from a 1621 book by Jonannes Kepler, which explains why Kepler believed the Sun was the Prime Mover of the planets in their orbit around the Sun.
We shall take a look at Kepler’s Three Laws of Planetary Motion in this book. The mathematics of logarithms will be introduced and then used to derive Kepler’s Third Law. Some of the math of ellipses will be presented as well as a derivation of the Bode-Titius Rule for Planetary orbits.
Several Book Questions are included including a challenge to derive a law for the Saturn Moon system and those for Exoplanets similar to eh Bode-Titius Law.
This book sets the foundation for the volume on Isaac Newton and his Theory of Universal Gravity, a subsequent volume in The New Mathematics for the Millions series about Edmund Halley and his Comet.
