Africa, with its array of talents and a vast resource base of nature, has the potential of becoming a great force to be reckoned with in global economics. The unforgiving voice of statistics and the media can however educate productively, how that Africa is anything but experiencing meaningful economic growth and development. From growing levels of poverty, deprivation, and destitution, to rising levels of unemployment, declining foreign direct investments, high debt to GDP ratio, low domestic production capacity, and widening balance of payments deficits; and from health and educational infrastructural deficits to other sectoral imbalances that continue to affect aggregate economic performance, there are hosts of challenges that appear to be both causes and the consequences of underdevelopment among African nations. Today, the majority of Africa’s population lives in untold uncertainties, destitute to fear and despair; so much that hope has been cast off, and it is almost unfair to demand some faith in the potential greatness of Africa.
Against the backdrop of Africa’s progressive inability to wave goodbye to development-resistive practices, policies, and programmes that have kept the Continent hostage to economic underdevelopment, and the seeming impossibility of economic transition to the desired zones of all-round economic development, this book is written to both x-ray the anatomy of economic underdevelopment in Africa, and to also inspire hope in Africa’s future. This is not the first book written on African economic development and probably not the first you might come in contact with to provide an answer to why the continent is reduced to a speck of dust and a footnote on the rich pages of development. However, an exposition is made on the economic setting and an all-inclusive, all-involving, and all-encompassing analysis is made on the economic development prospects and problems in Africa, one unique feature characterizing the contents of this book that might not be readily obtainable in other texts. Essentially also, an attempt is made here to answer the one-billion-dollar question of whether Africa is inherently or intrinsically resistive to development or not.
